I can honestly hand on heart say that Liddi and I are having the absolute best time since we cross to border to Scotland.

The scenery up here has stolen my heart and I feel as though have fallen in love, every corner we turn Liddi and I are gasp "wow" it is truly truly beautiful.

So first stop was the lovely Coffee Shop in Strathpeffer. Uber cool coffee house complete with silent laurel and hardy movies and a soda fountain store. We had a wonderful show with the kindest of audiences. Many thanks to Rob Ellen for putting us on, to be honest I have developed a bit of a mini crush on Rob, he has a great warmth to him. The gig is run along similar lines to a house concert which made the whole atmosphere all lovely and warm. We stayed overnight with Jim and Marilyn on the breathtaking Cairngorm mountains. We drove up to the house late at night when it was pretty dark so couldn't really take in the scenery but awoke in the morning to realise that there was a snow capped mountain right outside the window. I have never breathed air so fresh or eaten eggs so yellow. Wonderful.

Next stop we made a lovely journey over the highlands to catch the ferry over to Mull.

Onwards to Tobermory which to be honest I think is the prettiest village I have ever been to. Huge thanks to Gordon and the team at the An Tobar arts centre that were our hosts for the evening. After a quick photo shoot with the gorgeous men of the Tobermory RNLI crew, we were straight up to the show:

I managed to catch a shot of the stage backstage which for me summises why I love/fear gigging. It's the moment when you see the stage all lit up backstage with an empty seat and your guitar waiting ready.....there is nothing left to do but play:

The show was wonderful and the audience were as good as they come. After staying in the fab B&B gordon sorted for us and eating potato scones for breakfast we made the drive down from the highlands to Edinburgh. Last night I caught up with a old friend I haven't seen in over 12 years, strange to realise how much time changes and doesn't change us at the same time.

So, now we have arrived in Kirkcaldy for the show tonight at The Acoustic Club. I can't believe we are counting down our last three shows. Tomorrow we head up to the highlands again to the loft in Forres before the long long long drive down to Burton on Trent for the last show on Saurday at The Madhouse. If you are anywhere near driving distance of Burton on Saturday you should come along for the following reasons a) it's our last gig of the tour b) the madhouse is brilliant and c) if all goes to plan Clive will be heading across to play the set with us.

Super exciting I get to see Dom on Saturday and this time not leave him to go anywhere else. However, I do have a desperate urge to write new material so my friend is going to try and sort me out a little hideaway in Ireland for a week so I can lock myself away with my guitar and a keyboard to get some new material written.

Liddi is good, being a rock and I have laminated her a certficate for best equipment lugger the world has ever seen.

Doing the laundry...

I've developed a fascination with laundrettes, this is not new to me, I've had it for a few years, but I only get reminded of it when a visit to the launderette is looming. Like this morning..this morning was a laundrette in Inverness:

I think it is because they are a tiny little oasis in an otherwise hectic world. You simply must just sit down for an hour or so. You don't need to go anywhere, feel guilty about not doing anything or try to do anything else. You must simply just guard your washing and sit on your bum. I was devastated this morning to find the launderette also had internet access. NO! This must be stopped a launderette has one purpose only - washing (and occasional dreaming the guy from old 90's levi's ad may come in at any moment)

So anyway I digress, we have arrived in the highlands for the Scottish leg of the tour. The long drive yesterday was beautiful, the 110 miles of the A9 from Stirling to Inverness is magnificent. Today, Liddi and I are gonna head over to see Loch Ness (if only I had my thistle whistle) and then over to Strathpeffer for tonights show at the The Coffee Shop.

I can't believe it is only 5 more shows til the tour is over, it seems like only yesterday we set off but as though I've been away for a lifetime as well. Strange.

I'm desperate to get home and find myself some writing space and time, I think I may try and find a little hideaway somewhere for a week, I can feel a whole new album's worth of material coming on.

Right, I'm off to get me a nessie.

Feeling hot hot hot

Boy o boy, this touring malarky is harder than I thought. Every second seems to be allocated to one of the following activities:

1. Lugging stuff

2. Playing

3. Sleeping

4. Washing

I have finally managed to grab half an hour at my mates place in Liverpool to catch up on blogging...so where have we been....hmm..right, after Kelveldon we played in the lovely lovely manningtree, super fun show where two monumentous things happened, firstly we were mobbed by adoring fans:

and two, Liddi and I finally bonded:

Manningtree is a fabulous gig, we had a wonderful Georgian house all to ourselves and Myrtel makes the best cooked breakfast, thanks so much to all the gang for having us.

Next up we headed over to the wonderful Hitchin folk club to support Boo Hewerdine. The hotel was great and it was fantastic to finally have somewhere to rest our heads for more than one night. To celebrate I unpacked a bag and bought mountains of sweets from the awesome sweet shop in town. They even pipe Willy Wonka film tunes through the store!

Home sweet home at the Sun Hotel.

What heaven looks like.

Liddi and I are particuarly impressed with our sweet consumption thus far and are now heading into our retro phase of army and navy, cola cubes and banana split. Yes, yes, we are doing well.

We've played Laundan town and the mondaymonday folk club with some great support from Matt Munro and Raven. We've also played the lovely Hoy at the Anchor folk club in Leigh on Sea which is right by the sea and reminded us of home.

There is some fantastic talent in Leigh on Sea and the singer spots before us were really lovely. So from Leigh on Sea we headed north to Otley to stay with the lovely lovely Patsy Matheson and her family for a couple of nights. We played at the cross keys folk club which to be honest has probably been my favourite show so far. Only because Clive finished his support with Jools Holland then headed over to catch the end of my set and joined in for the last 4 numbers, lovely.

I had a BBC interview with BBC Lancashire interview yesterday and tonight we will be playing at a house concert in Preston. Tomorrow, we cross the border to Scotland.

So how are we doing? To be honest I am completely knackered, unsure of what day it is and just a touch homesick but Liddi and I are both super looking forward to seeing the highlands tomorrow. Also, it is too hot, too too hot, I'm melting. I didn't bring any summer clothes and am therefore staying in my nightwear for as long as possible before having to drag my jeans on. They said it was cold up north, they lied.

get into the groove...

Ahh lovely, this is the life, had an absolutely great gig with Clive last night at the institute at kelvedon, which is quickly becoming one of my favourite venues to play. Mainly because James is one of the most professional promoters I have ever met:

James Partridge - approach with caution.

We've had a lovely lazy morning of swanking around in Clive's hotel eating breakfast and nicking their wi-fi, which is where I am blogging from. The 48 hours prior to these have been somewhat more of a slog, we've done a show at The Beehive in Swindon, many thanks to Andy for having us and for Justin and Claire for suprising me by turning up to the show. We then drove overnight to Heathrow so that we were situated half way between the next show, only to discover when we checked into the hotel that I had left my laptop at The Beehive. So next morning we had a VERY long and horrible horrible drive back to swindon and then back across country to Kelveldon. I now have a deep hatred for the M25 and would quite happily blow it up and will endeavour never to have to drive on it ever again in my lifetime. My arse now looks like the bucket of the driving seat. Nice.

Last night I had a lovely time falling asleep in a rocking chair whilst Clive sang me songs backstage, Clive's set was awesome last night with fab new material. If you get a chance to catch him whilst he's on this tour I highly highly recommend it. I know he's me mate and all that but boy that man knows how to write a killer song.

Today? We are chillaxing, super. Breakfast done, 5 cups of coffee, gonna do a bit of essentials shopping and then meander on over to Manningtree to decamp to tonights accommodation and have showers and a nap before the show this evening.

We are having a lovely time, but I'm missing Dom loads :( and it's only day 4!! So we managed to get everything crammed in the car (just) - ta da:

Last night saw us at the travellers rest in Draycott, Derby. Fun show, special thanks to Liz and Lynn for coming over to see us (again), it's like having proper groupies!! Also thanks to Kevin for having us and putting us up for the night.

We have spent today with a radio interview with the spectacularly lovely Geoff McQueen, on Bay fm, then tootling our way over to Swindon, where we are now decamped at the The Beehive for the show this evening. The majority of the journey was spent battling with Liddi about the temperature in the car. Liddi seems to think that -240c is a suitable interior temperature whereas I would prefer to feel as though I am in a sauna. The result was me being having to put every item of clothing I bought with me on as well as two blankets and a hat, whilst Liddi drove in her underwear (not quite, but you get the picture). Right o, we're off to find hot food and get set up for tonight.

We are super looking forward to tomorrow night with Clive at The Institute in Kelvedon, yay!

Toodle pips.

It's tough being a girl...

Ahh 48 hours of being at home, lovely. Tomorrow we set off for the long 20 day stint on the road and I am spending these last hours having a post op check up at the hospital and attempting to pack for the road.

Now, if I was a boy, this would be an easy task. Boys are the road are smelly, revolting creatures and would probably only pack one pair of jeans, two pairs of boxers, one pair of socks and two t-shirts for the entire time. I, however, am not a boy. Thus, I am having to attempt to cram everything I require into a case that is a least physically possibly to pick up. Girls just need more things, toiletries for a start. Clothes, now I'm NOT turning my pants inside out for anyone nor am I prepared to wear the same pair of jeans for 20 days straight. What about my hair dryer? Make up? Bras? Selection of co-ordinating outfits? Hmmm...no it's no good liddi is just gonna have to sit on the roof, I can't fit it all in the punto. Liddi has refused. Right then, I'll leave behind the PA, mic stands, mics and guitars. Nope. Need them. Argh, a trailer? No too expensive. There is nothing for it, I shall have to forsake the 4 coats and make do with just one.

We have encountered another problem. Liddi and I have what appears to be matching clothes. This I assure you is completely accidental and was only discovered recently at a motorway service station when people started look at us funny. I then realised not only were we both wearing dark jeans, black tops but also the exact same brown leather jacket. This is NOT a band uniform. We have now then had to devise a "clothing rota" which means I can wear the coat on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. Neither of us are allowed to wear it on Sundays.

So where have we been? Well Leicester was the last stop, a lovely show at the musician with a super lovely crowd. Huge thanks to Liz and Lynn for rallying the troops, we had a fab time and our support for the evening came in the form of the fabulous Cole Stacey. Cole and his pal Scott were fantastic and we hope to see them on the road again soon.

Right then, I'm off to curse the suitcase, pick up the last minute essentials and run the last load of errands before we hit the road tomorrow.

Latest pics:

Backstage at the musician, leicester.

What we look at all day long.

What we do when we are not doing that.

I just canny do it captain....

I tried, honest to God I have tried to blog everyday liked promised, but it has become a quick realisation that finding wi-fi access on the road is not always as easy as it looks. But at last we have settled into a pub in Trowbridge with some drinks and wifi access. Woop.

Liddi and I are having a wonderful first leg of the tour. Wednesday saw us start the day at BBC Leicester for a super fun interview with Jim Smallman and then onto Biddulph for a set at the wonderful Biddulph up in Arms. We knew we had struck gold the minute we arrived at Graham and Vanyas with whom we were staying. Not only do they have a truly wonderful home but they welcomed us like old friends which made us feel all gooey, plus we love Aggie the dog.

Aggie the dog

Breakfast, yummmmmmmmmmmeeeeeee.

What a view to wake up to!

Everyone at Biddulph Up in Arms was lovely huge thanks to Eric, Craig, John, Sylvia and the gang for having us, sorry about spilling an entire glass of coke all over the stage when I went on. Biddulph was great for ironing out the clitches before we head on for the long leg next week. Must NOT wear shows on stage and must sit down whenever possible. For some reason I am 4323489 times more nervous when I stand up.

Last night we had a super fun show in Cwmaman at the acoustic lounge, huge thanks to Huw and Graham for having us, fantastic sound system. Hopefully I'll be back for the festival in the autumn. We had to travel on last night and finally rested our heads at the lovely brooklands motel. Liddi did a sterling job on the driving front but is a bit tired now:

So we have landed in Trowbridge, had some italian food, chilling out for a couple of hours before sound check for the folk club tonight.

Ta-Da. I've blogged, super super proud of errrr me! yay.

Byyeeee

What is that jumper I'm wearing??!? Never again.

You know your famous when......

Right o. We're off. The new album tour has offically started and I am already behind on the whole blogging thing. In my defence, it's been a bit stop/start this week and I will probably do better with my blogging once I'm on the road full time.

The album launch was fantastic, thank-you so much to everyone that came out to make it such an amazing night for me and the band. We all loved it and it was utterly brilliant turning to my left and seeing Clive playing and making me feel all safe and what not.

So we've been to Bristol and Cornwall so far, reached the pinnacle of my career thus far when I arrived at the Crumplehorn Inn to find my face on all the fag butt bins. True:

Thanks so much to Sonya in Cornwall who always puts on original music in the fantastic Crumplehorn Inn, so many landlords these days just put on some covers singer/duo that it is becoming rarer and rarer to find pubs that support original artists and have macaroni cheese on the menu - yum.

This rest of this week has consisted of vast amounts of sleep after the album launch and attempting to pack and re pack the car to try and fit in everything we need to tour with. Which has been successful other than whoever is in the passengers seat (me or liddi) needs to also share the seat with 2 mic stands, a suitcase, a case of bottled water and a super sized bag of haribo. Ho-hum that's the touring life.
We set off on Wednesday for a BBC interview in the morning followed by Biddulph, Aberdare and then Trowbridge before another brief stopover at home before we go onto the long haul stretch. Anyway, here's a few pics from the album launch.

Must. I am a terrible terrible blogger. But in my defence the last few months have been filled with all sorts of unexpected turns.

The part:three gig has been and gone and it was a tremendous success. Pete, Alex and I all thoroughly enjoyed the show and are looking forward to doing a few more together over the summer including the isle of wight festival.

Unfortunately my health hasn't been quite so successful, I was quite poorly for the first few months of this year which resulted in a fairly dramatic emergency bowel resection a few weeks ago. This has played havoc with my music, I had to cancel all my shows in March and it was looking like I wasn't going to be able to launch the album and do the spring tour. But by the miraculous hands of the surgeons at Poole Hospital, they have managed to fix me up, staple me back together and I am pretty much completely recovered now. So, it seems that the hands of fate are playing me a good game and I'm all set to send the new album off into the world.

My day today has consisted of nothing but nerves waiting for Nat at Disc Factory to call and tell me the albums were ready for collected. Lo and behold he calls at 3.30pm and says "they are here and they are beautiful, I think this is the best project we have ever worked on". So, I ran to the car, forgot to put on my glasses and drove half blind to Ringwood to see the final product. Nat was right they are simply beautiful. I know that they are mine and I shouldn't say that but Ross has done such a truly amazing job with the artwork, Clive and Jim De Maine have mastered it to brilliance in Nashville and the band have worked so hard that I can't help but be proud.

So, they are ready for pre-orders at www.loubrownmusic.com I promise if you order a copy you won't be disappointed, even if you totally hate the music you can frame the cover.

Liddy and I have started rehearsing up for the tour. We've got a lot of songs to nail but I'm pretty confident we can get there. Clive is flying over a few days before the album launch so that we have 3 days solid band rehearsals for the show.

If you haven't bought your tickets for the album launch yet you can buy them at:

http://www.mrkyps.net/gigdetails.asp?eventID=1896

I'm nervous, I'm hoping people love the album but I won't know until I can convince them to buy a copy. If you live anywhere near the shows for the spring tour I would love it if you came. I'm gonna try and do a daily blog whilst I tour...hmmm...seeing how it is 3 months since I last blogged this may or may not come off.

I'll leave you with some pictures of the last few months.

Back Cover of the new "Calm The Rising Waters" album.

Here they are!

Part:Three

Part:Three

For the sake of.....

So it's all over. My jeans won't fit, the tree has been taken down, christmas lights scrunched into ball even though I know next year I will take them out cursing myself that I didn't put them away neatly and sick of the sound of auld langs syne. Here it is then 2010.

All off to good start, media coverage in the press on the 1st January and then we heard on the 7th that I've been selected to play at Celtic Connections in Scotland next week. Had a band meeting with Lidia this evening and we are all set for the month long spring tour. We are tired just thinking about it, this'll be my first time on the road for more than 2 days without Dom doing road management and we have packed the gigs in. Dom kindly informed me that we need to be on the 7.20am ferry out of the isle of mull on the 26th of May. 7.20AM?? Surely this is not true, I thought touring was all about lazing around in swanky hotels rooms whilst calling for room service. Hmmm...all is not how it seems. Still we have a handful of lovely pre-tour warm up shows that I am really looking forward to.

We are incredibly busy getting ready for the album launch on the 28th April. The design team are busy scribbling and doodling for the album sleeve and generally making lovely creative goodness whilst I irritate them by continuously changing the actual packaging template. I really have to make a decision.

Clive Gregson lands back in the UK next week to start mixing the album and then he'll take it over to Nashville to get mastered in Feb. I'm so lucky to be in a position where I have absolutely confidence in his abilities to make it sound fantastic. Eek is all too exciting.

On the 28th Jan I'm doing a show called part:three at Mr Kyps in Poole. I'm actually quite nervous about this one, we are doing a songwriters revue with three songwriters sharing one stage and I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone by doing harmony vocals, playing the ebow and turning my guitar into a drum kit. Still, we can but try..

That's pretty much it this end, here's a few links and some pictures of rehearsals for part:three.

Happy New Year.

xx

part:three: www.mrkyps.net/gigdetails.asp?eventID=1865

Album launch: www.mrkyps.net/gigdetails.asp?eventID=1896

Spring tour and pre-tour warm-up dates: http://www.loubrownmusic.com/

Clive Gregson: http://www.clivegregson.com/

(All pictures © Fiona Anderson)

Alex Roberts: http://www.alexrobertsmusic.com/

Pete Christie: http://www.petechristie.co.uk/

Greatest thing I ever did do dah do do....

I could write a million words on this blog about how we have created the new album. I could spend a week telling people excitedly about every moment in the studio. I could weep with gratitude for hours to Clive Gregson, Lidia, Simon, Aimee and Martin for how hard they have worked for me over the past two weeks. I could sleep for a month as I am so tired and overexcited about the whole affair.

But I won't. I'll just tell you that I have a new album and I am so proud of it I could spontaneously combust. OK, so it has a few journeys to go yet: it needs to go up North to be mixed, to Nashville to be mastered, to Suzie and Ross to get a beautiful coat designed for it and to the printing press to be replicated, but I have the first rough mixes on my ipod.

For me, Aimee sumed the whole thing up on the phone last night. "It's like, you know, Clive Gregson actually gets you, he's found the sound you've been looking for forever, it's like, wow." Yup. That's pretty much it.

I think what I loved most about making the album was that we did it "old school" - no effects, no auto tune, no fancy pants sampling, no dropping in fixes, if we didn't play it right, we played it again. Our hand claps are actually done with hands, the tracks were laid down with us playing as a band, the backing vocals on Jimmy Joe were done with everyone standing round one mic, and every night we crawled home exhausted, which is how it should be. We put everything into it.

So I'll hush my mouth as I could go on forever and put up some pics.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas, I feel like I'm a bit delayed with getting into the swing of it with the album but today I'm off Christmas shopping with my mum, baking Christmas biscuits this afternoon and spending the evening making decorations so I'll hopefully be all Christmas-fied by tonight.

Lou xxx

Cream Teas and Tipis

"Have we got everything Dom?" "I'm sure." he says firmly.

So, off we pootle on Monday morning for our first gig of the week, Polperro Festival, Cornwall. We arrive in blazing sunshine to a teeny weeny National Trust campsite which was picture perfect and only 3 other people camping in the field and a complete bargain at £8 per night. So we unload the boot and pitch up the tent. Outer tent up? check. Inner tent up? check. Kettle on? check. Air mattress inflated? check. "erm..Dom?" I ask quietly "Where's the duvet and pillows?". Brrrr....it was a cold night.

Still the gig in Polperro was wonderful and I'm looking forward to going back next year. Polperro, if you have never been is a beautiful, truly breathtakingly beautiful fishing village. After being looked after wonderfully by the Crumplehorn Inn, we spent Tuesday morning eating a delicious cream tea by the harbour. Perhaps, the main reason for my love of Polperro has come from the fact that they don't put small rabbit poo's into their scones. Scones should be plain in my opinion without any fancy dried fruit products shoved into the mix and that's exactly what they do in Polperro, delicious plain scones, plenty of clotted cream and some gorgeous strawberry conserve.
Truly British and truly delicious. Yum.

The campsite, Polperro

Polperro, Cornwall

Tuesday was a meander to BBC Radio Bristol and after a quick stop to buy a duvet and pillows I arrived just in time for my interview with Andy Howard. Andy does a great show called "Morning Glory" on BBC Radio Bristol and I always love chatting with him. He's a very funny man, and often you can steal small momento's from the studio such as the odd BBC pen and dirty mug without him even noticing. Lovely. So onto the campsite just outside Bristol for our last night of relative quietness. We arrived in the roasting heat and when Dom asked where we should pitch the tent I quickly insisted we should camp in the shade by the river. In my defence this seemed to be a good idea at the time. However, I had forgotten that river banks are called river banks because they bank towards the river. We awoke at 6am to find that we were actually sleeping on top of each other as the entire tent and matress had slid toward the water. Up we packed and off to Glastonbury for an adventure lickedy split.

The joys of having artists tickets for Glasto became apparent from the minute we arrived. Thousands of cars were queued up to get on site but thankfully for us we had a "blue route" pass which meant we could access the site without that much queueing at all. I felt really bad for everyone else as they must have been roasting in the queue, and goodness what they had to do if they needed a little wee wee. Not good at all. The absolutely greatest thing about playing at Glastonbury without any doubt whatsoever was the use of an artists luggage taxi. We called production on arrival and John tootled up in his 4x4, piled our stuff in and dropped us right at our pitch. Now that in my opinion is star treatment.

We got accredited at production and had a little swank around the backstage bar and went off to have a look at the stage I would be playing on, on Friday. My first thought was "eeekkk...this tent is HUGE..I'm gonna get lost in here", so we quickly left before I got freaked out too much a went for wander around the festival. I say this as though it was a short stroll but for those of you who have never been to Glastonbury, it is enormous. It takes a least an hour to walk from one side of the site to the other and that's only if you don't get caught up in any crowds. It is like no other festival on earth and explaining it seems futile, but if I had to I guess for me it's like how the world would be if creative people were left to their own devices. The sculptures, stalls, stages, shows, circus, cinema, theatre are truly awesome, the whole festival is truly awesome.

So quickly 11pm arrived and we made the great hike up to Worthy FM which is the radio station set up especially for Glastonbury Festival. I was doing a live half hour gig on their "midnight on the wireless" show. Funnily enough it was at midnight. It was a great station and the gig was around a lovely warm camp fire and I just sat on a sofa and sang into the mic. Beautiful. I even got a coffee in a real china mug.

'Midnight at the Wireless', Worthy FM, Glastonbury

Friday was the big day of the gig and after a fairly early night I was pretty confident about the whole thing. Until that is, I realised that I was the only person playing solo and I had to follow an 11 piece ska band. Now that's daunting. So 543589380 cigarettes later backstage I was up. Not so bad when I was up there, other than just as I was going to do some slow stuff the main stage opposite started so I could barely hear myself sing. Still, I knew that would be a risk and the sound guys were awesome. I got through it alive which is the main thing.

Then slam blam on Saturday morning we get a text message asking if I wanted to do a private gig with Johnnie Walker from Radio 2. Hmmmm...let me consider this....err.... yay! So a hike up to the Tipi Field and next thing you know Johnnie Walker is recording the gig in a tipi. I have to say I looked terrible, and this was bad news, if you have the opportunity to meet a

famous Radio 2 DJ you really want to be looking a least semi-decent. Bearing in mind I hadn't had a shower for 4 days and had been living in a tent for nearly a week things were not looking good. My hair by this point was not far from dreadlocks, and despite washing regularly in a bucket of hot soapy water I'm not entirely sure I didn't smell slightly of gorgonzola. Still I played and walked away thinking....how cool was that? and also...I've got to find some way of washing my hair.

So, Monday morning comes and I am awoken by Dom shaking me and muttering something about Radio 2 and the breakfast show. I tell him that I hate his guts for waking me up and there had a better be a good reason such as a) the tent is on fire b) there are free donuts outside or c) I am about to be played on the "Wake Up to Wogan" show. Sure enough it was option c. So as I'm sitting on the camping toilet doing me doo dah's my mum calls shouting that I'm on the radio and holds her phone to the speaker so I can hear.

Best moment of my life? Sitting on a fire bucket fashioned into a camping toilet, doing me doo dah's and listening to myself on radio 2 for the first time.

Glastonbury? Brilliant.

me, Johnnie Walker and Dom in a teepee at Glastonbury.

Ellie (with broken heel), me, Hannah and Tiggy Walker (who is the nicest woman in the wholest widest world)
